Comment on As seen in Edible Boston by Steve Paquette

Good afternoon,

I saw the article about you in this month’s Edible Boston magazine. I am a real estate developer that has specialized in affordable multifamily housing over the last twenty five years. For the past few years, I have been on a mission to create and build a small scale public market that would incorporate the resurgence in the local food movement as well as the seasonal aspects of the farmers market. It would be located within an indoor / outdoor market setting and would offer space for vendors, large and small to grow their businesses.

Today our children live in a plastic, disposable society, where everything has to be immediate. They are bombarded with “reality” television and fast food ads. Obesity is at epidemic levels, due to high sugar, packaged foods with artificial flavors and colors. I think deep down inside, we all feel a sense that something is missing, something important has been lost. As a baby boomer, I remember a childhood with far more substance, due largely to the rewarding social connection of living in a community where all the merchants knew us, from the milk man to the butcher and so on.

I want very much for my children and their generation to experience the intrinsic pleasure and genuine deep satisfaction of not only eating well but cooking from scratch with real ingredients, of preparing meals together in a family setting. I want to create an exciting place, a venue that captures this movement and offers a kind of incubator for small businesses like yours. While I have the passion for the idea and the experience in the development and construction of buildings, I lack the full understanding of the individual needs of merchants like yourself. I would love the opportunity to speak with you about my concept and whether you think it might be beneficial to your business model. I have more preliminary information regarding this market setting that I would be happy to show you. Should you care to speak with me, please feel free to a mail me at spaquette@splllc.com or at 603-582-0151.

I wish you good fortune in your business and look forward to speaking with you.

Sincerely,

Steve Paquette
