About the artist: Katherine Downey Miller is an accomplished artist and native New Englander. She received her BS in studio art from Skidmore College and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts and Illustration at Visual Essay program in NYC. Her large format landscape and abstract oil paintings can be found gracing the walls of the Copley Society, the Cambridge Art Association, the Artist Association of Nantucket and Galatea Fine Arts in Boston, MA.

About the collaboration: Valerie, the owner and chief chocolatier of vianne chocolat, and Katherine have been friends and neighbors for over eight years in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood and have their kitchen and studio space across from each other in Jamaica Plain. After participating in a neighborhood marketplace together, the two decided to join their creative talents to produce the vianne box, a wooden box with an inlaid encaustic art panel and filled with vianne chocolat handmade artisan chocolates. Each box is an original piece of art signed by the artist and allows the recipient to enjoy some of Boston’s best handmade chocolates in a functional piece of art that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Our pug bars are made using a 66 percent fair-trade, organic chocolate and get their adorable shape from an antique mold reproduction. The best part about these cute little six pugs sitting in a line is that we’ve partnered with the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) and donate 25 cents of each pug bar sale to this wonderful organization.

Why the MSPCA? There are so many worthy organizations out there. But, when we were looking to support an organization we felt it was important to choose one that had an impact on our personal lives at vianne chocolat. Angell Memorial Hospital, a part of the MSPCA, was instrumental in saving the life of our Chief Chocolatier and Owner’s dog Isabella. Years ago Isabella became very sick one Saturday afternoon. After a half day at her vet running tests, there was still no definite answer as to what was wrong with her. We decided to take her to Angell Memorial and after one ultrasound discovered she needed emergency gall bladder surgery.

The doctors and staff were compassionate and understanding and most importantly quick. The facilities are built with the differing needs of pet owners in mind in order to make everyone comfortable in what is usually an uncomfortable situation.

Seven years later and Isabella just celebrated her 10th birthday and we’re continuing the celebration by choosing to make our charity of choice the MSPCA. We hope you’ll join us by purchasing a pug bar.
